When you meet Dr. Alexandra Kharazi, MD, FACS, one of San Diego’s leading cardiothoracic surgeons, you quickly discover that her story is about much more than medicine. It is about resilience, compassion, and the unwavering belief that every challenge can become an opportunity to rise.
From Kyiv to California: A Journey of Hope
Dr. Kharazi’s story begins in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she was born before her family immigrated to the United States when she was just six years old. Arriving in California during a time of major transition, her family built a new life filled with determination and hope. They eventually made San Diego their home, captivated by its warmth, community, and endless coastline.
Growing up in an immigrant household instilled in Alexandra the values of perseverance, gratitude, and service. She often reflects on how those early years gave her the strength and empathy she carries into every operating room today.
The Spark That Lit the Path to Medicine
As a young student, Alexandra found herself fascinated by science and the human body, but it was her early volunteer work with patients that revealed her true calling. She saw firsthand the vulnerability of people facing illness, and she knew she wanted to dedicate her life to making a difference.
That dedication carried her to the University of California, Davis, where she earned her medical degree. She went on to complete residency training in New York and advanced fellowship training at Vidant Medical Center, developing her expertise in heart valve surgery, aortic repair, coronary bypass, and thoracic procedures. Along the way, she earned a master’s degree in biology and conducted advanced molecular research, sharpening both her technical and investigative skills.
A Doctor First, a Surgeon Second
Today, as a board-certified heart surgeon in San Diego, Dr. Kharazi is known for more than her surgical precision. Her patients describe her as approachable, genuine, and deeply invested in their journey to healing. In her own words, she is “a doctor first, and a surgeon second.”
That philosophy shines through in every consultation. Whether she is preparing a patient for complex cardiac surgery or following up long after the procedure, Dr. Kharazi’s focus is always on listening, guiding, and treating the whole person — not just the condition.
Coming Home to San Diego
After years of rigorous training across the country, Dr. Kharazi returned home to Southern California, joining Sharp HealthCare’s network of hospitals and serving patients throughout the region. For her, San Diego is more than just where she practices — it is where her heart is.
More Than Medicine: Leadership and Inspiration
Outside of the operating room, Dr. Kharazi is an author, speaker, and consultant. She founded Heart of Motivation Consulting to share the lessons she’s learned about courage, mindset, and thriving under pressure. Her book, The Heart of Fear, offers
practice built on listening, and a dedication to making every patient feel like family.
